Research
GSNI delivers science and innovation research to meet the needs of all of our stakeholders.
Our role is to ensure decision-makers and communities have access to the best available geoscience evidence, clearly explained, transparently caveated, and responsibly applied.
Research framework
GSNI undertakes applied and strategic geoscience research in line with its Research Framework, ensuring that scientific activity aligns with Northern Ireland's long-term policy priorities, risk profile, and societal needs.
Minerals
GSNI provides technical advice to the Department of the Economy for mineral exploration and minerals policy in Northern Ireland, giving support and advice on identifying critical raw materials.
Abandoned mines
We look after more than 2400 abandoned mine workings on behalf of the Department for the Economy and help manage the risk posed by Northern Ireland's mining legacy.
Geohazards
GSNI monitors and assesses a range of shallow geohazards that present a direct risk to people or an indirect risk by affecting development.
Energy
GSNI supports the Department for the Economy in the development of geoscience-related energy initiatives including geothermal energy, geological storage potential and the siting of offshore and onshore wind developments.
Groundwater
We undertake groundwater-related monitoring and surveys, and have extensive data and information to support the development of groundwater resources.
Coastal change
GSNI provides monitoring and assessment of coastal change to support collaborative decision making to minimise the impact of climate change and other environmental considerations.
Geoscience into policy
GSNI plays an active role in shaping policy, research, and decision-making across Northern Ireland through participation in a wide range of government, local authority, and stakeholder groups.
Baseline geoscience
We provide baseline geoscientific data and information to underpin all of our science programmes and to support the delivery of our strategy.
Geoscience for planning
GSNI is a statutory and a non-statutory consultee for development proposals within Northern Ireland and contributes to planning-related matters at local and central government levels.
Geoheritage and tourism
