How we work

GSNI was established in 1947 as an Agency Service operated for the Department for Economic Development (now the Department for the Economy) by the British Geological Survey (BGS), an arrangement that still exists to this day.

Since its creation, GSNI has provided impartial and independent geoscience information and advice to assist with decision making, primarily to help develop Northern Ireland's economy. Our scientific research has made a huge impact and continues to do so today.
